Making home or making do: a critical look at homemaking without a home

This paper critically examines the concept of alternative forms ‘homemaking’ among people without a settled home. The introductory section establishes framework for paper, providing an overview homelessness and homemaking literature. Strengths in approach are identified, which reconceptualises as human-centered phenomenon that can be understood ‘resistance’ to societies block accesses mainstream housing who (also) socially economically marginalised. Homemaking moves beyond academic analyses explore terms ‘sin’ (addiction criminality), ‘sickness’ (poor health, especially poor mental health) ‘systems’ (housing market failure inadequate social protection public health systems). argues that, while important refreshing our thinking about by offering new, radical epistemology housing, is limited not contextualising dwelling practices it seeks explain, particularly respect how defines ‘homelessness’ also risks misinterpreting transitory behavioural adaptations something deeper.
